Immediately, doctors at the hospital began exploring and decided that surgery would be the best option to help the patient.
They came to the conclusion that the patient was suffering from a form of megacolon and tests quickly confirmed that the young man had months’ – if not years’ – worth of feces trapped in the degenerative section of his colon.
According to one source, megacolon “is an abnormal dilation of the colon (also called the large intestine). The dilation is often accompanied by a paralysis of the peristaltic movements of the bowel. In more extreme cases, the feces consolidate into hard masses inside the colon, called fecalomas (literally, fecal tumor), which can require surgery to be removed.”
After a three-hour surgery, the doctors were able to remove 30 inches of his large intestine. The rare condition left him constipated for years and an extreme build up of “poo” was causing a blockage that needed to be extracted.
The part of his large intestine that was removed was stitched closed at both ends to prevent his stool from falling out. In the end, the doctors weighed the piece they removed and found that it was roughly 28 lbs.
The patient is said to be stable and is expected to make a full recovery. We wish him the best of luck.
